What is EnglishMojo?

“EnglishMojo” might seem a strange pair of elements to join together. But “English” and “Mojo” have a lot in common.

First “mojo”. It’s a word adopted into English. Most likely derived from a west African term meaning medicine man, it surfaced in a creole spoken along the southeastern coast of the United States. Mojo came to denote witchcraft and magic, and an amulet or charm believed to carry a magic spell. Today it means magical abilities or the power to get things done.

“English”, too, came from overseas. The word is from “Engle”, a group of people that also migrated westward, but from the current area of western Germany and Denmark to the current east coast of the United Kingdom. It soon came to mean all the Germanic inhabitants of Britain, and their language.

So EnglishMojo - as coined by the founder of this web site - means the powers of this sometimes magical language. Hence the subtitle, Power in Language.

EnglishMojo has taken on the role of international explorer of English and its global adventures. We investigate the powerful users and uses of the language today for our growing global audience of English speakers.

Published as audio productions and articles, EnglishMojo offers fresh observations, news, information and analysis through its books, syndication outlets, web site, email and new media channels. Its editor and publisher is the author of six books who has resided or traveled extensively in 40 countries on 5 continents.

All the articles and productions of EnglishMojo serve one purpose, the enjoyment and benefit of readers and listeners - you. Feel free to send in your questions, comments and suggestions about our power-in-language explorations. We aim to serve up lots of EnglishMojo. And we’d like to know what you like best.

Thanks for joining us in this adventure.
